Date(s)/Time of Activity: 5/16/2026 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM CST Title of Activity: Branding for Interpreters Level of Participant’s Prior Knowledge of Topic: Little/None Target Audience: NAIE Members Presenter Bio: Joshua Pennise, MBA, MA, CI and CT, NIC Advanced, learned to use American Sign Language by immersion at Deaf community events and learned to interpret by mentoring with incredible practitioners in the field. Community education was followed by formal training in general communication theory (BA) and applied linguistics (MA). While studying at Old Dominion University in the linguistics department, Josh focused on ASL usage- particularly among Deaf individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. Josh returned to school in 2022 and completed MBA degrees from both Columbia University and London Business School. Professional Experience Josh has been a certified interpreter since he was 18 years of age and has practiced in nearly all fields. He formerly coordinated interpreting services at the Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind and Multidisabled where he gained substantial experience interpreting for students with Intellectual Disabilities and other types of atypical cognition. Since 2006, he has been in the business side of interpreting, as an operations manager, general manager, and CEO. Teaching Experience Josh was an adjunct and full-time instructor at Tidewater Community College’s interpreter training program for a total of ten years, teaching all levels of ASL and interpreting. In addition, he has been a sought after presenter throughout the United States at local, affiliate chapter, regional and national RID events. Leadership Experience Josh has served the profession on a voluntary basis since 2000. He served for nine years on the board of Virginia RID, four of which were as president. He served one term as the RID Region II Representative and two terms as RID’s Secretary. Josh currently serves on the board of the Association of Language Companies as its Vice President. Workshop/Course Description: In this three-hour, live virtual presentation, you will learn how to take control of the your professional brand through tools such as resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles. Learn how to communicate clearly who you are as an interpreter and what value you bring to the table. Pre and post-content will allow you to deepen their learning beyond the live workshop including arming you with helpful resources to continue learning.
