“Mastery of Meaning”
Presented by William F. Ross III, M.S.
William F. Ross III, M.S., Vice President for Hands Up
Communications, Primary author for the fifth edition of “You Want to
Be An Interpreter?” He has been an interpreter for 35+ years and
holds national certification from the RID.
This workshop addresses the heart of interpreting – meaning. How
do we manage shades of meaning, addressing subtleties and
nuances found in language? As interpreters, we determine
meaning through a combination of factors such as context,
intonation, intent, setting, and other linguistic features. We often
use implication and inference to insinuate meaning beyond the
words spoken. This training focuses on interpretation from English
to ASL and how to gain mastery over meaning.
