| “Looking to the Future”Ruthanna ReardonThough Ruthanna (she| her | hers) has no Deaf members in her immediate family, her passion for ASL began at a young age. Her family began learning signs from the book, “The Joy of Signing.” She later worked as a paraeducator for school year supporting 4 Deaf-Disabled middle and high schoolers. Once she completes her ITP, she hopes to share that same joy of signing to K-12 classrooms. |
| “Embracing The Present”Bella, a 14-year-old eighth grader at Douglas Middle School, is leaving a lasting legacy through her art. She painted a ceiling tile for her teacher’s classroom that will remain even after she moves on to high school—her way of “honoring the past.”Inspired by her love of tigers, Bella combined a tiger’s face with traced images of her own hands, painted in her skin tone to show herself signing “tiger.” With encouragement from Sherri Warren and her teachers, Bella brought her vision to life, blending creativity, language, and identity into one powerful piece.Thank you, Bella, for inspiring us as we prepare for the 10th Anniversary NAIE Conference at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. How will you honor the past, embrace the present, and look to the future?Sherri Warren, the school’s Educational Sign Language Interpreter, works closely with Bella and has more than 20 years of experience in educational interpreting. |
