The workshops are designed for interpreters working in K-12 classroom settings\, community interpreters with an interest in educational interpreting\, future interpreters\, K-12 interpreter mentors\, deaf educators\, and individuals supervising educational interpreters. The descriptions below may change slightly at the discretion of the presenter. \nApril 1\, 2023\, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. CT \n“Mastery of Meaning” \nPresented by William F. Ross III\, M.S. \nWilliam F. Ross III\, M.S.\, Vice President for Hands Up\nCommunications\, Primary author for the fifth edition of “You Want to\nBe An Interpreter?” He has been an interpreter for 35+ years and\nholds national certification from the RID. \nThis workshop addresses the heart of interpreting – meaning. How\ndo we manage shades of meaning\, addressing subtleties and\nnuances found in language? As interpreters\, we determine\nmeaning through a combination of factors such as context\,\nintonation\, intent\, setting\, and other linguistic features. We often\nuse implication and inference to insinuate meaning beyond the\nwords spoken. This training focuses on interpretation from English\nto ASL and how to gain mastery over meaning. \nBoys Town EIPA Website For More Information and Registration: https://eipa.boystown.org/workshops \nLog in to your NAIE Portal to retrieve a discount code for 20% off this event. Sign language interpreters in the K-12 setting are typically not trained in these aspects of deliberate teaching. However\, the role of the interpreter\, as part of the educational team\, is essential in supporting a student’s ability to access academic language and teaching goals. This session guides us through educational discourse and identifies various practices of direct instruction in both English and ASL instructors.
